A report about a Domino’s delivery driver in Michigan who was robbed twice in the course of a month and forced to pay back the stolen money to his employer turned out to be false, according to KTLA sister station WXMI in Grand Rapids.
The station initially reported Monday that the delivery driver was asked to pay back the $20 after being robbed. However, Ronnie Asmar, the operations director with STA Management — a Domino’s franchisee — refuted that report, telling WXMI Tuesday that the driver did not have to reimburse the company for the lost funds.
In the interview with the station, Asmar said that the company’s policy states delivery drivers must pay back the money if they are robbed while carrying more than $20 during deliveries.
Drivers are instructed for their own safety to return cash to the store after each delivery when they are in possession of more than $20, he said.
“They should never leave the store with more than $20 on them, usually $15,” Asmar told the station in an earlier interview.
He said the reason drivers are required to deposit money following each delivery is so they don’t have more than $20 on them at one time, protecting both the company and the employee.
Asmar told WXMI in the later interview that the employee was carrying more than that amount at the time of the robbery, but emphasized the driver was not forced to pay it back. Although he confirmed the company’s policy, Asmar said drivers are never asked to reimburse the company after being robbed.
The most recent incident in which the driver was robbed occurred Saturday around 8 p.m., according to the television station.
The had made an extra delivery before he was able to go back to the store, Asmar said. The assailant ended up getting away with about $50.
