Detroit Lions player Cameron Sutton wanted on Florida domestic violence warrant

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida sheriff’s office says it is searching for Detroit Lions cornerback Cameron Sutton in connection to an alleged domestic violence incident.

An active arrest order for Sutton from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office lists a charge of domestic battery by strangulation.

The sheriff’s office tells Nexstar’s WFLA they were called to a home in Lutz, about 15 miles north of Tampa, at about 5 a.m. on March 7. There, Sutton and a woman were allegedly having an argument that became physical.

The woman suffered bruises to her head, neck, and upper body, deputies reported.

Authorities said numerous attempts to contact Sutton, 29, have been unsuccessful.

The warrant was issued based on the evidence they found, and law enforcement suspects that Sutton has fled Tampa, Phil Martello, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office told the Detroit Free Press.

WFLA obtained a copy of that warrant, however, it was largely redacted and provided only Sutton’s basic information.

The Lions signed Sutton to a $33 million, three-year contract a little more than a year ago, targeting him as a key player to acquire last offseason. He helped the franchise win a division title for the first time in three decades along with two playoff games in one postseason for the first time since 1957.

“We became aware of the ongoing legal situation involving Cam Sutton this morning,” the Lions said in a statement to Nexstar’s WFLA. “We will continue to monitor the situation and will not have further comment at this time.”

Sutton started in all 17 regular season games, making a career-high 65 tackles and one interception, and in each of Detroit’s three playoff games.

Sutton started 31 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2021 and 2022 seasons, making five interceptions with 95 tackles. The Steelers drafted the former Tennessee star, who is from Jonesboro, Georgia, in the third round in 2017. He has nine interceptions in 101 games over his career.

Sutton may be in a Jeep Wagoneer with Florida license plate AZ33QB. Anyone with information is asked to call 813-247-8200.
