Spilled antifreeze from an overturned big rig forced an hourslong closure of the southbound 710 Freeway near Commerce Thursday morning.
The solo-vehicle crash was reported about 1:45 a.m. just north of the 5 Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol’s traffic incident log.
The driver told investigators he was unable to maintain control of the vehicle and a shift in the load’s balance caused the truck to overturn, California Highway Patrol Officer Hector Placencia said.
“Fortunately, it’s not a flammable chemical so we’re just trying to contain the scene right now,” he said.
Due to the spill, which apparently involved antifreeze, officials were forced to issue a Sig Alert and close all southbound lanes of the 710 Freeway.
Traffic was being diverted to the southbound 5 Freeway, according to the CHP.
The southbound freeway remained closed for several hours before it reopened about 12:30 p.m., according to the CHP.
