Texas Gov. Rick Perry was indicted by a grand jury in Austin on Friday, accusing him of abusing his powers by terminating funding for the state’s public integrity unit, which investigates corruption. He had threatened to do so unless District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg resigned.
The charges come at a politically inopportune time for Perry, who has been actively engaged in remaking his image from his disastrous 2012 presidential campaign, in which he stumbled in debates and plummeted from early front-runner to also-ran. Perry has been among the potential candidates most actively courting fundraisers and voters in early states.
Perry’s office has repeatedly said that he violated no laws.
