The two-star U.S. Army general who was killed in Afghanistan in an insider attack Tuesday was a native of upstate New York who held two degrees from the University of Southern California.

Maj. Gen. Harold Greene, identified by a U.S. official, died in the attack near Kabul and was believed to be the highest-ranking U.S. military official killed in action since the war began in Afghanistan in 2001. The shooter was killed in the attack, and 15 others others were wounded.

Greene’s position as the deputy for acquisition and systems management for the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army was announced in January, according to a Pentagon news release.

An Army news release from 2009 announcing a promotion for Greene said he had a wife, Sue Myers, who was a colonel at the U.S. Army War College, and at least one child, a daughter, Amelia.
