Autopia, a gas-powered attraction located within Disneyland’s Tomorrowland, is getting electrified, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“As the industry moves toward alternative fuel sources, we have developed a roadmap to electrify this attraction and are evaluating technology that will enable us to convert from gas engines in the next few years,” Jessica Good, a Disneyland Resort spokesperson, said in an email to the publication.
Disney didn’t confirm whether the cars would be transformed into electric vehicles or hybrids or a timeline for when the project would be completed.
The classic attraction, popular among young guests who get to experience driving for the first time, is as old as Disneyland itself, opening with the theme park in 1955.
Changes have come to the famed attraction; for example, it was renamed the Fantasyland Autopia and later the “Rescue Rangers Raceway” during the earlier days of Disneyland, but this is the first time Disney announced plans to move away from gas-powered vehicles.
The news of the changes coming to Autopia comes amid other renovations and upgrades at “The Happiest Place on Earth.
Walt Disney Imagineers are continuing to work on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, slated to open sometime this year; construction walls are up around the Haunted Mansion attraction as crews work on a larger outdoor queue and a Madame Leota-themed retail shop, and Disney is working to revamp the entryway gates at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
