WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Vice President Kamala Harris made her first appearance Monday since entering the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Harris started by thanking President Joe Biden but didn’t directly discuss her candidacy.
“Joe Biden’s legacy of accomplishment over the past three years is unmatched in modern history,” she said. “Our president, Joe Biden, fights for the American people.”
President Biden made the big decision Sunday not to seek re-election. In a letter posted online, he wrote, “It is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
A growing list of Democrats have thrown their support behind Harris, like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) says he plans to meet with Vice President Harris.
“Vice President Kamala Harris has excited the community. She’s excited the House Democratic Caucus.” Jeffries told reporters.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) questions the legality of Democrats switching candidates.
“You don’t just, you know, steamroll the rules in the process because you decide that your candidate is no longer suitable,” he said.
