If you have limited storage space, clothing storage containers are key

Have you ever had trouble finding your favorite winter sweater when the weather cooled off? Or torn the house apart looking for that one pair of sandals? If you’re struggling to find space for your clothing, or if items seem to disappear into the clutter, consider implementing a rotating wardrobe. By keeping your clothing sorted by season, these clothing storage containers can help you rediscover closet space as well as your next favorite outfit.

How to seasonally rotate your wardrobe

You don’t need your winter coat in the middle of summer, nor do you need all yourT-shirts on hand during January. A rotating wardrobe makes it easier to see what clothing you have so you can stay organized, buy less clothing and wear your seasonal favorites more often.

Seasonal wardrobe swaps don’t require a lot of space either. With some creative thinking and a few thoughtful tools, you can find space for a rotating wardrobe in even the smallest closet.

Under-bed storage

The space under the bed is perfect for seasonal wardrobe storage since it only needs to be accessed a couple times a year. Under-bed storage bins come in lots of sizes to accommodate everything from swimwear to winter coats. Folding or rolling clothing up into storage bins helps it stay clean, dust-free and ready to wear.

Use transparent bins or clearly-written labels to help you see at a glance what’s under your bed. Fold cedarwood blocks, lavender sachets or dryer sheets between your clothes to keep them fresh and deter moths. A small box of baking soda can also help protect stored clothing from odors and moisture.

Vacuum bags for clothing

Vacuum bags are a storage must-have for smaller spaces. Their compression makes it possible to store bulky items, such as winter coats and thick sweaters, in less space compared to traditional storage bins.

Since they close with an airtight seal, vacuum bags are better at protecting clothing from storage concerns such as moths, mildew and dust. Some vacuum bags are designed to be stored lying down while others come with hooks to hang up in your closet.

However, since the fabric is so tightly compressed inside vacuum bags, items will emerge quite wrinkled. In most cases, these wrinkles can be washed or ironed out, but some delicate fabrics or design elements, such as shoulder pads and collars, can be permanently misshapen. Choose which clothing pieces you’ll store in vacuum bags with care, and don’t leave anything in a vacuum bag for more than six months at a time.

Preparing clothing for storage

To prepare your seasonal wardobe for storage, go through your closet to decide what you want to keep, what you want to store and what you can donate. Once you’ve decided what’s going into storage, wash it and make sure it dries fully to prevent mildew. Make sure any shoes and accessories are clean so they’re also free from dirt and body oils before they’re packed up. Wrap or stuff items with acid-free tissue paper to protect the fabric and help items like purses keep their shape.

Consider where you’ll store your clothing when you choose storage containers. Breathable storage bins are suitable for use in indoor, climate-controlled environments. However, if you’re storing off-season clothing in a garage or basement, your clothing will need additional protection from moisture and pests. Plastic storage bins and vacuum bags may be a better choice.

Taking clothing out of storage

If you properly washed and dried your clothing before packing it away, it should be ready to wear right away. Steam or launder any items that need to be refreshed and get ready to enjoy a whole new season of style. Repeat the packing steps to replace the previous season’s clothing in storage for next time.
