How do water guns work?

Simple, old-school water guns have a trigger connected to a pump. The pump has a tube to pull water from a reservoir inside the gun and through the barrel to emerge at the end of the gun. The stream is fairly concentrated and pretty weak, but the biggest drawback to this water gun style is that its reservoir doesn’t hold much water. That means you have to stop regularly during a water fight to refill.

You can also find some more advanced water guns with a syringe-like mechanism instead of a trigger. It has a piston and cylinder that you pull apart to draw water from the reservoir and then slide back together to shoot. These water guns produce streams with more water and power and don’t require you to keep pulling a trigger to shoot. You do need more strength to shoot them, though.

Pump-action water guns are the Cadillac of water guns. They create water pressure before you shoot the gun by pumping air or water into the reservoir. These guns have two reservoirs connected by tubes. You fill the larger reservoir and pump the gun to draw water into the second reservoir, so when you push the handle, it drives the water out. Unlike a basic water gun that only shoots 8 to 9 feet, these pump-action guns can spray water at a distance of more than 50 feet.
