California wildlife officials say the upcoming spring turkey season could be one for the record books as the state’s wild turkey population continues to flourish in certain regions.

The statewide spring hunting season takes place March 29 through May 4, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife will host a variety of “special turkey hunts” throughout the season.

But prior to open season, a junior weekend, which allows minor hunters to get in the action before the rest of the state, will take place on the weekend of March 22. An additional junior season will take place after the general season between May 5-18.

For Californians interested in hunting turkey this spring, there are a few things you need to know:

  • Shooting hours for spring turkeys: 30 minutes before sunrise to 5 p.m.
  • Hunting license & Upland Game Bird Validation required (junior hunters need only license)
  • Limit: 1 bearded turkey per day, 3 per spring season
  • Nonlead shot required statewide for firearms
  • Crossbows allowed in general season; Disabled Archer Permit needed during archery season

Dozens of wildlife areas managed by CDFW will be open to wild turkey hunting throughout the season on a walk-in basis. Those hunting on public lands should check with the local agency that manages them.

Fish and Wildlife also has a library of advanced hunter education seminars on its YouTube page for those new to the sport.

Hunting licenses can be purchased online, in-person at a local license agent or through the CDFW License app.
