Ohio State missed out for the third straight year — the first time since the 1990s. West Virginia, Indiana, OSU and Boise State were the first four teams to miss the cut, while Texas, Xavier, San Diego State, and North Carolina were the last four teams in.
North Carolina is the most controversial selection, with a record of 1-12 against Quad 1 schools. The school’s athletic director, Bubba Cunningham, is the chair of the selection committee.
CBS analyst Seth Davis acknowledged it right away when he opened his interview with Cunningham by wondering “whether North Carolina may have gotten a little bit of an advantage with its AD as the chair.”
Cunningham’s vice chair, Keith Gill, who in an unusual move was also brought in for the interview, insisted it had not.
“As vice chair, I managed all the conversations we had about North Carolina, and we had quite a few,” Gill said.
He confirmed that Cunningham was not allowed to participate in any vote about his school. The Tar Heels were the last team in, based not on its 1-12 record against Quad 1 teams but on its 8-0 mark against Quad 2, along with other favorable metrics, Gill said.
“You take all those things in consideration, and the committee felt they should earn that last spot,” Gill said.
The First Four is in Dayton, Ohio, on Tuesday and Wednesday, and first- and second-round games are Thursday and Friday, stretching from Providence, Rhode Island, to Seattle. The Sweet 16 weekend will see games March 27-30 in Newark, New Jersey (East Regional), Atlanta (South), Indianapolis (Midwest) and San Francisco (West).
The Final Four is in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, April 5, with the championship game the night of Monday, April 7.
